Spurring unprecedented urbanization and industrialization, Mexicos mid twentieth-century economic miracle brought about a wide range of innovations in architecture and design, especially in Mexico City, where these processes were primarily concentrated. No urban artifact emerged at the time as a better showpiece for these processes than the capitals underground transit system, originally slated to open in time for the 1968 Summer Olympics celebrated in the city, but which only opened a year later, to great fanfare. Allowing visitors and residents of the city to traverse the archaeologically rich and intricate entrails of the Mexican capital, the subway was simultaneously promoted as patent proof of Mexicos arrival to the developed world. Inscribing the subway systems design process within the broader context of mid twentieth-century official culture in Mexico, this talk will examine the numerous discursive contradictions and social conflicts that defined the actual completion of this ambitious work of urban infrastructure, linking its promotion and reception as a technological and cultural wonder to longer histories of modernist experiments.
Luis Castañeda is an assistant professor of Art History at Syracuse University. His work explores the mid-twentieth-century intersections between art, architecture, media and cultural display in Mexico and Latin America. Legal History Workshop to be held in 55 Mondale Hall
Adam Kosto is a Professor of History at Columbia University where he specializes in the institutional history of medieval Europe, with a focus on Catalonia and the Mediterranean. He received his B.A. from Yale (1989), an M.Phil. from Cambridge (1990), and his Ph.D. from Harvard (1996). He is the author of Making Agreements in Medieval Catalonia: Power, Order, and the Written Word, 1000-1200 (Cambridge UP, 2001) and the forthcoming Hostages in the Middle Ages (Oxford UP, 2012), and co-editor of The Experience of Power in Medieval Europe , 950–1350 (Ashgate, 2005), Charters, Cartularies, and Archives: The Preservation and Transmission of Documents in the Medieval West (PIMS, 2002), and the forthcoming Documentary Practices and the Laity in the Early Middle Ages (Cambridge UP, 2012).
In the European Middle Ages, as in premodern societies generally, hostages were given, not taken. They were a form of personal surety used to guarantee agreements ranging from interstate treaties to wartime undertakings to financial transactions. The present paper explores two aspects of medieval hostages of interest to legal historians. The first part attempts to understand the logic of the medieval hostage-as-guarantee with reference to modern scholarship on contract theory, in particular work on credible commitments. While the analogy between the medieval hostage and, for example, modern sunk costs quickly runs aground, such comparisons are nonetheless fruitful. The second part of the paper looks to the writings of medieval canon lawyers for the origins of the objections to premodern hostageship that contributed to its decline in the Early Modern era; it then demonstrates how this decline led the Nuremberg tribunals to ground its decisions on hostages in a flawed understanding of the history of the institution.

Romance and relaxation are the topics of a special evening tour and relaxation class at the James J. Hill House—St. Pauls premiere Gilded Age mansion. During the tour, costumed actors will portray some romantic adventures of the Hill House family members and servants, based on excerpts of letters, diaries, and oral histories preserved by the Minnesota Historical Society. For those who enjoy the series Downton Abbey, you can imagine how life at the Hill House was quite similar.
After the tour, the visitors and actors will gather in the elegant Drawing Room where life coach Beth Freschi will provide a guided relaxation class focusing on the Loving Kindness Meditation and other relaxation techniques that calm the mind and body. The class will begin with deep breathing, followed by a muscle relaxation exercise, guided imagery and two versions of the loving kindness meditation. Practicing relaxation techniques with a loved one can be a wonderful bonding experience, and singles are also welcome to come and experience an expanded view of love and Valentines Day.
This event is for ages 18 and older.
All proceeds go to the Minnesota Historical Society. Refreshments will be served, and each guest will receive a relaxation gift bag.
