Description
2011 was a confusing year, full of good and bad news. VCs invested roughly $26B, up from $23B in 2010, but VC fundraising was only roughly $14B, so the VCs invested $12B more than they raised in 2011 and $10B more than they raised in 2010, an unsustainable model. Three of the top 4 sectors in 2011 - cleantech, biotech, and medical devices - all face major obstacles and spark much skepticism from many investors. Roughly 50 VC backed companies went public in the US in 2011, down from 75 in 2010, a modest year from a historical perspective. The VC market is in disequilibrium...it cannot stay like this. Will 2012 be better, worse, or the same as 2011? Why are most companies using Pillsbury and PwC? Only our experts know! Come hear the answers!

Description
Tuesday, February 7, 2012, 5.30pm to 8pm
2012 is a year of uncertainty - the global economy is still faltering, the Eurozone is collapsing, the US election machine is starting, yet VCs seem to be continuing to invest in start-ups around the globe. Do they know something we dont or are they taking advantage of lower valuations in order to cover some of their losses from the recession? We have pulled together some of the leading venture capitalists from Silicon Valley to seek their views and predictions for the year ahead and amongst others will ask:
* How will the economy fare in 2012?
* Is the Valley a bubble and will VC investment continue irrespective of the rest of the country/world?
* Which industries are hottest for VCs and why?
* Which industries will lose popularity this year and which will flourish?
* Can the infrastructure of Silicon Valley be replicated elsewhere in the world?
* Tech IPOs seem to be back, although not necessarily with a vengeance: will we see confidence grow?
* Weve seen some recent activity of Valley VCs investing in the UK and elsewhere in Europe. Is this a trend?
Our exciting panelists include:
* Tim Chang, Managing Director - Mayfield Fund
* Stephen Eichenlaub, Managing Director Platform Technologies, Cleantech & Digital Health Sectors - Intel Capital
* Robin Murray, Partner - Adams Street Partners
* Bill Reichert, Managing Director - Garage Technology Ventures
Moderator:
* Richard Waters, San Francisco Bureau Chief, West Coast Editor - Financial Times
Come and join a very lively debate and ask them direct what their New Year resolutions include.

SPEAKERS:
Wael Ghonim, Author, Revolution 2.0
Moderator: Laura Sydell, NPR Correspondent
Come meet and speak with Wael Ghonim, and hear first-hand what can happen when personal conviction and social media unite. The revolutions sweeping the Middle East in 2011 were unlike any the world had ever seen. How did it all start? In the fall of 2010, then-30-year-old Ghonim launched a Facebook page to protest the death of an Egyptian citizen, Khaled Said, at the hands of the police. The page attracted thousands of members and, combined with Twitter and YouTube, became an outlet for like minds to speak out and reach out to others on issues of corruption, brutality, and oppression. This sparked online and real-world protests, Ghonims arrest, and eventually, a revolution that led to the departure of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Dont miss this rare opportunity to personally see and hear Ghonim, author of the newly released Revolution 2.0, tell the inside story in an onstage interview with NPR correspondent Laura Sydell.

Description
Nearly half of all women business owners in the US finance their business with personal or family savings in order to stay in business. The rate of home foreclosures in California is at 10%. Unemployment is at a record high, and the cost of living continues to increase. How do you keep your cool and stay on top of your financial situation?
A lot of people feel depressed and helpless when they look at their checking accounts. While nobody seems to have the right strategy to overcome these economically challenging times our goal is to provide you with a better insight into financial planning, locally and globally, talk about the implications of having assets in two countries and find out more about how your emotions take part.
Join this discussion with fellow female professionals who will get the conversation started with their stories, share your own story, and be inspired by an interesting topic and an amazing group of women.
Our goal for the GABA Women in Business group is to provide a forum for women to build relationships, get inspired, and share our experiences.

About this event-
One of the main goals of Steves presentation is to give attendees a better understanding of why they need to pay close attention to the details of their contracts, and to give fellow photographers, especially emerging photographers, a better understanding of what the business of photography is all about. Risk management is a big issue in our profession and too many people dont fully appreciate its importance. Case studies - including the lighting of a 24-story office tower - are used to help illustrate a range of issues. Project coordination, execution and wrap up are discussed as well.
Photographers today are facing more challenges today than ever before. The corporate world is becoming a more challenging environment and photographers are struggling to deal with those many changes. Emerging and seasoned photographers seem to hunger for more opportunities to learn how to deal in today’s world of challenges.
Estimating, licensing issues, scouting assignments, risk management, copyright concerns are important factors. Assignments require attention from preparation through delivery and beyond. It’s important to communicate with the client throughout the process. It’s equally important to charge for those services and those charges appear on every estimate before the assignment is authorized.
Topics covered:
Estimating /Contracts / Stock issues
Assignment project coordination
Permits/release forms/film commissions
Risk Management /Safety issues
Assignment preparation, scouting
Case study- Assignment execution, related to lighting 24 story office tower
Copyright Registration
Post production
Steve Whittaker is based on the San Francisco peninsula, covering loca, regional and national assignments. The majority of his work is architectural, interior and aerial photography. His specialty is lighting buildings at dusk. His clients range from architects, advertising agencies, interior designers, corporate direct and hospitality.
Steve joined ASMP in 1983. In 1995, he became an active ASMP Northern California Chapter board member with a focus on outreach and education to emerging photographers. In 1999-2001, he was chapter Co-President and joined other ASMP Architectural Photographers with ASMP Architecture-an active specialty group of ASMP. In March 2010 Steve was elected to the ASMP National Board of Directors. Over the past year, he has presented this program in Denver, New York at Photo Plus Plus in 2010 and recently at the Seattle and San Diego ASMP chapters.

Description
Step right up and take a peek back in time as historian James R. Smith reveals a bygone era of seaside amusement in San Francisco. With rare photos and stories from his fascinating book "San Francisco’s Playland at the Beach: The Early Years," Smith brings the midway to life in this lively lecture about the citys greatest amusement park during its early heyday from 1914-1945.
Start your evening with a private viewing of the Conservatorys delightful garden railway exhibition, "Playland at the Conservatory." Try your hand at vintage arcade games and chat with former Playland carny Marvin Gold. Then sit back and enjoy the ride as Smith explores the phenomenon that was Playland at the Beach.
California historian James R. Smith is the author of "San Francisco’s Playland at the Beach: The Early Years," "San Franciscos Lost Landmarks" and co-author of "The California Snatch Racket: Kidnappings in the Prohibition and Depression Eras." A well-respected authority on San Francisco history, he has spent many years researching and chronicling the stories of San Francisco and California. He is a fourth-generation native of San Francisco and a sixth-generation Californian.

Description
6 Tuesdays starting Feb 7, 6:30-9:30, and Sat March 17, 9am to 4pm
Be Prepared . . . Free training! Six Tuesday evenings and a Saturday will prepare you to help yourself, your family, neighbors and your community during a disaster.
After a large scale disaster like 9/11 or the Loma Prieta earthquake, emergency services personnel wont be able to reach everyone in need right away. Since 1994 when FEMA began promoting nationwide use of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) concept, hundreds of CERT programs have been established in communities across the country.
The goal of CERT training is to train people living in the community to take care of themselves, their families and their neighbors in the event of a disaster.
Youll learn the skills to help save lives and protect property. Classes are taught by Fire District personnel in basic fire suppression, utility control, light search & rescue and disaster medical. Other topics include disaster psychology and disaster incident management. Training is interactive and concludes with a hands-on exercise.
Training involves six evening sessions and one Saturday for a total of 22 hours. Theres no charge for the class, but pre-registration is required. First class February 7th. Enroll today.
