The discovery of a new Earth, or other world, may be in our future, says Sasselov. But a truly "alien" life form is more likely to emerge from our planets natural environment or in a petri dish at a research lab. In the past year, we have witnessed unprecedented breakthroughs in the seemingly unrelated fields of synthetic biology and exo-planetary astronomy. Just recently, arsenic-based bacteria was discovered in a California lake – both puzzling and electrifying the scientific world. The San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery’s Art at City Hall program presents Seeing Double – The Best of DOUBLEtruck Magazine, a travelling exhibition organized by KONA Gallery and Photojournalism Center (San Clemente, CA). Seeing Double offers a chance to view a selection of over 60 of the best photographs featured in the first five years of the award-winning quarterly magazine DOUBLEtruck. The exhibition is a virtual time capsule of some of the most memorable moments in recent history captured by world-renowned photojournalists.
SFAC Gallery Director, Meg Shiffler says, “Hosting this epic exhibition at historic City Hall offers viewers the opportunity to learn about, or revisit, the celebrations and tragedies that have defined recent history through iconic images that illuminate the human condition.”
Seeing Double was curated by Scott McKeirnen, publisher of DOUBLEtruck, director of KONA Gallery and Photojournalism Center, and the founder of ZUMA Press, the largest picture agency and wire service in the world run by a photojournalist. Launched in 2004, DOUBLEtruck is dedicated to promoting outstanding photojournalism and showcasing high-impact photography of important world issues. The magazine’s title refers to an ad or editorial project that covers two facing pages.
“The magazine was inspired by the photojournalism renaissance in 2003, when major magazines around the globe ran amazing picture content of the Iraq conflict over numerous two-page spreads,” said Mc Kiernan. The A List Series: Grant Washburn - In Conversation with Bruce Macgowan.
Years before anyone imagined a high-stakes surf contest off Half Moon Bay, Grant Washburn was among a dozen or so wetsuit-clad surfers who dripped into the Roadhouse Café to devour the sour cream and guacamole-laden “breakfast in a barrel” and tell stories about the massive waves at a largely unknown spot called Mavericks.
Since the first official contest in 1998, Mavericks has morphed from an obscure surfing phenomenon into the home of one of the world’s most famous big-wave events. Tens of thousands of spectators now flock to Half Moon Bay for the annual competition, and last year the total prize money swelled to $150,000.
But throughout the years, friends say, Washburn has remained focused on one thing: the waves. They can break as high as 50 or 60 feet at Mavericks. He studies them like a scientist, recording the data in a calendar.
He knows the waves so well that he can look at a picture and likely tell you what day it was taken. “Big wave surfing,” he said, “is something you do because you can’t help it.”
Because of his unabashed dedication to the sport, Washburn has become an unofficial face for a campaign by competitive surfers, local photographers and surf contest organizers to assume management of the Mavericks competition.
