STG presents Wilco on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at The Paramount Theatre in Seattle.
Wilco rose from the ashes of the seminal roots rock band Uncle Tupelo, which disbanded in 1994. While Jay Farrar, one of the groups two singer/songwriters, went on to form Son Volt, his ex-partner Jeff Tweedy established Wilco along with the remaining members of Tupelos final incarnation, which included drummer Ken Coomer as well as part-time bandmates John Stirratt (bass) and Max Johnston (mandolin, banjo, fiddle, and lap steel). Guitarist Jay Bennett rounded out the group, which in 1995 issued its debut album, A.M., a collection of spry country-rock tunes that followed the course established in Tweedys earlier work.

During their heyday in the first half of the 1990s, The Jayhawks perfected a captivating sound that seamlessly blended the elegant folk-rock of The Byrds, the adventurousness of Buffalo Springfield, the hippiebilly soulfulness of The Flying Burrito Brothers, and the soaring harmonies of The Beach Boys. So it’s richly ironic that their reappearance coincides with a dramatic resurgence of the musical approach they played such a central role in perpetuating—but this time around, The Jayhawks themselves are revered as icons by the young bands carrying on those same traditions, and it’s their own legacy that they’re advancing. On Mockingbird Time, their eighth album, and the first with the original lineup since 1995’s Tomorrow The Green Grass, they’re once again pushing the envelope in songs and performances of rarefied dynamism and grace. Bherd Studios Gallery presents “Pretty, Sexy, Dirty Girly", a multimedia exhibition of all female artists addressing the topic of feminine sexuality, curated by Seattle artist, Siolo Thompson. The exhibit opens on Friday, February 10th and includes everything from pin up photographs and figurative paintings and illustrations to pieces that will challenge the viewer to look beyond the surface of the work and examine their reactions and interactions with the work and the artists. For example, Maggie Schneider, one of the artists will perform "pants. dance. revolution," where she will dance in her underwear inside the gallery while listening to music that only she can hear. Her performance will thrust the audience into a voyeuristic role asking the viewer to examine how they feel about this type of public expression.
Another featured artist, Andie deRoux, who has worked as a model and been photographed by a wide array of fashion and fetish photographers, is also a transsexual female. Andie brings an important and individual perspective to the exhibit through the opportunity to understand her unique version of feminine sexuality. In addition, burlesque performers Lyla la Coeur and Cherry Manhattan will perform during the exhibits artist opening. Burlesque and its recent explosion in popularity represent a powerful antithesis to the ideal version of female sexuality that society typically promotes.
“Buy Dirty Art for a Clean Cause”
Attendee’s will have two chances to support a “clean cause”. The gallery will be holding a raffle AND will be a collection station for bringing new socks, laundry soap, toothbrushes and other hygiene items to support the Urban Rest Stop. The Urban Rest Stop in Seattle is a charity that provides a clean, safe and welcoming facility where individuals and families in need can come and use restrooms, shower and laundry facilities. They are an important service that has benefited thousands of homeless and needy folks over the years and these services have been provided at no cost to patrons.
“Pretty, Sexy, Dirty Girly” opens on Friday, February 10th with an artist reception from 6pm – 10pm. The exhibit will continue through Friday, March 2nd and can be viewed during regular gallery hours Wednesday – Friday from noon -6pm. All participating artists include: Andie deRoux, Crystal Barbre, Jackie Kingsbury, Niffer Calderwood, Cat Davis, Maggie Schneider, Debora Spencer, Jenn Brisson, Sadie Beaudett, Jenny Dayton and burlesque performances by Lyla la Coeur and Cherry Manhattan.
